Josh Brolin Shows Off Tattoos & Shirtless Physique in Whalefall Photo

The movie adaptation of Whalefall has officially entered production, with author-turned-screenwriter Daniel Kraus sharing a behind-the-scenes look at Josh Brolin as the tattooed Mitt Gardiner.

Kraus announced the start of production through his newsletter. He co-wrote the screenplay alongside director Brian Duffield, who has helmed features like No One Will Save You and Spontaneous. The upcoming survival thriller will follow teenage scuba diver Jay Gardiner who, in search of his deceased father’s remains across the ocean, is swallowed by a sperm whale. He only has an hour to escape before his oxygen supply runs out.

Who else is in the Whalefall movie adaptation cast?

In addition to Brolin as Mitt, Whalefall will also star Austin Abrams (Do Revenge) as Jay Gardiner. They will be joined by Elisabeth Shue (Hollow Man), Jane Levy (Don’t Breathe), John Ortiz (The Madness), and Emily Rudd (One Piece).

“Nearly all of my books have been optioned at some point, but very few get shot, and I wouldn’t have necessarily bet on the book that’s mostly set inside a whale would be the one to get there — and attract so much talent,” Kraus wrote in his newsletter.

He continued, “Not only Brolin, but Austin Abrams (playing Jay), who I’ve gotten to know as a good dude who is super-super-super serious about this role.”

The New York Times bestseller has written The Monster Variations, Rotters, Scowler, Blood Sugar, The Ghost That Ate Us: The Tragic True Story of the Burger City Poltergeist, and more. He has also collaborated with filmmaker Guillermo del Toro for the novelization of The Shape of Water and was enlisted to complete George A. Romero’s unfinished novel, The Living Dead.

The release date for Whalefall has yet to be announced.
