Superman: Krypto Spin-off Gets an Update From James Gunn, Will Be Animated

James Gunn has confirmed plans for a series of Krypto shorts.

Gunn’s Superman movie, which will feature Krypto, is being released in United States theaters next month. It stars David Corenswet as the titular superhero, Rachel Brosnahan as Lois Lane, and Nicholas Hoult as Lex Luthor.

In February 2025, Gunn said that Krypto will star in a series of short films following his DCU debut in Superman. He explained at the time, “We’ve got these cool little Krypto shorts that are so fun, man. I’ve been watching all of them. He’s a terrible, terrible dog. It’s for families, and it’s just really fun and goofy. It’s pretty cool.”

What did Superman’s James Gunn say about the Krypto shorts?

While it’s known that the shorts will begin releasing in the fall and that there will be four of them in total, there hasn’t been much of an update about the project since then.

Now, however, Gunn has responded to a comment on social media, confirming that plans are still in motion. Furthermore, Gunn also seemingly confirmed that these shorts will be done in animation rather than live-action.

Plot details, along with what platform these shorts may be released on (presumably HBO Max), have not been revealed at this time.

Superman, meanwhile, flies into theaters on July 11, 2025, from Warner Bros. Pictures. The cast further includes Edi Gathegi, Nathan Fillion, Isabela Merced, Anthony Carrigan, Wendell Pierce, and more.

“Superman, DC Studios’ first feature film to hit the big screen, is set to soar into theaters worldwide this summer from Warner Bros. Pictures,” the synopsis for the movie reads. “In his signature style, James Gunn takes on the original superhero in the newly imagined DC universe with a singular blend of epic action, humor, and heart, delivering a Superman who’s driven by compassion and an inherent belief in the goodness of humankind.”
