Avatar: Fire and Ash’s Characters Are Forever Changed by Tragic Death

The cast of Avatar: Fire and Ash recently opened up about the upcoming movie, and specifically how the film will deal with one of the shocking deaths in Avatar: The Way of Water.

How Avatar: Fire and Ash will deal with Neteyam’s death

Speaking to Empire Magazine, Britain Dalton — who plays Lo’ak in the films — talked a bit about the death of Neteyam, Jake Sully and Neytiri’s oldest son and brother to Kiri, Lo’ak, and Tuktirey. Neteyam is killed toward the end of the movie in a shocking moment, which Cameron says will have ramifications for the Sully family in the third movie.

“[Lo’ak] was born to be a leader. But he’s never been given the trust,” said Dalton. “When Neteyam dies . . . that’s no way that he ever imagined being finally able to be seen. He blames himself.”

“I don’t think she’ll ever be the same,” said Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, who plays Tuktirey. “It’s the first time she’s experienced a death in her life. She’s still her small and mighty self, and maybe she’ll move up the Sully ranks.”

There’s also still the inclusion of Spider, the human stray and son of Colonel Miles Quaritch that Sully takes into his family. According to actor Jack Champion, Spider still feels conflicted about his lineage and where he stands in the world of Pandora.

“He feels very conflicted,” Champion said. “His ‘dad’ is reborn into this Na’vi form and still as evil as ever, if not more so, and he still felt he had to save him. You see that guilt play out, and the evolution of Spider trying to figure out where he belongs.”

Avatar: Fire and Ash is once again directed by Cameron, who co-wrote the screenplay with Rick Jaffa and Amanda Silver. The ensemble cast includes returning stars Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldaña, Sigourney Weaver, Stephen Lang, Giovanni Ribisi, Kate Winslet, Cliff Curtis, Joel David Moore, Trinity Jo-Li Bliss, Jack Champion, Bailey Bass, Edie Falco, and more.

Cameron previously said that the upcoming sequel will explore “different cultures from those I have already shown. The fire will be represented by the ‘Ash People.’ I want to show the Na’vi from another angle because, so far, I have only shown their good sides.”

“In the early films, there are very negative human examples and very positive Na’vi examples,” he continued. “In Avatar 3, we will do the opposite. We will also explore new worlds, while continuing the story of the main characters. I can say that the last parts will be the best. The others were an introduction, a way to set the table before serving the meal.”
