The Exorcist: Mike Flanagan Gives Disappointing Update on Reboot’s Release Date

Mike Flanagan has given a disappointing update regarding the release date of his The Exorcist reboot.

In May 2024, it was confirmed that Flanagan would helm a new The Exorcist movie. This news came after Blumhouse scrapped plans to continue David Gordon Green’s Exorcist trilogy after The Exorcist: Believer was received poorly by fans and critics.

Flanagan’s reboot was given a March 2026 release date; however, The Haunting of Hill House creator is now saying that it will likely be delayed.

What did Mike Flanagan say about The Exorcist reboot’s release date?

On Tumblr, Flanagan said that production on the new Exorcist movie has not yet started as he’s currently focused on getting the Carrie television show up and running.

“No way [The Exorcist reboot is] coming out next March,” Flanagan said. “Nothing to worry about though.”

There’s been no casting announced for Flanagan’s Exorcist movie as of yet, and plot details remain under wraps. Universal and Blumhouse originally bought the rights to The Exorcist from Morgan Creek for $400 million in 2021.

“The Exorcist is one of the reasons I became a filmmaker, and it is an honor to have the chance to try something fresh, bold, and terrifying within its universe,” Flanagan said when the project was announced, via Variety. “Reuniting with my friends at Blumhouse, with whom I’ve made some of my favorite pieces of work, only makes this more exciting.”

Flanagan’s Carrie series, meanwhile, is being made for Amazon Prime Video. It was officially greenlit in April 2025, and production is expected to begin in Vancouver in the coming weeks. The cast of the show includes Summer H. Howell as Carrie White, Siena Agudong as Sue Snell, Matthew Lillard as Principal Grayle, Samantha Sloyan as Margaret White, Alison Thornton as Chris Hargensen, Thalia Dudek as Emaline, Amber Midthunder as Miss Desjardin, Josie Totah as Tina, Arthur Conti as Billy, and Joel Oulette as Tommy.
