Superman Gets Its Official MPAA Rating & It’s No Surprise

With James Gunn’s Superman just a few weeks away from its release date, the movie has now received its official MPAA rating. The film, which will serve as the first theatrical outing in Gunn’s revamped DCU, promises to feature several intense action sequences, some of which could prove to be inappropriate for audiences under the 13-year-old mark, according to its recently confirmed rating.

Superman rated PG-13 for violence and other themes

According to Film Ratings, the MPAA has assigned a rating of PG-13 to the upcoming Superman movie. The website also explains that the David Corenswet-led film was given the rating due to the nature of the “violence, action, and language” it contains.

As such, the new Superman film will have the same MPAA rating as Gunn’s Marvel films, with all entries in his Guardians of the Galaxy trilogy receiving the same rating.

Superman’s PG-13 rating is also in line with the rating of the last two theatrical outings of the character, both the Henry Cavill-led Man of Steel as well as 2006’s Superman Returns, which featured Brandon Routh as Superman.

While many movies in the DCEU, which included Cavill’s Superman, also received PG-13 ratings, the special edition versions of some DCEU movies received higher ratings. Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice entered theaters with a PG-13 rating in 2016, only for Batman v Superman: Dawn of Justice: Ultimate Edition to receive an R rating. In a similar fashion, 2017’s Justice League also came along with parental guidance. Similarly, Zack Snyder’s Justice League, a much longer version of the Justice League film, which is often referred to as the Snyder Cut, hit HBO Max in 2021 with an R rating.

Aside from Corenswet, the star-studded cast of James Gunn’s Superman also boasts the likes of Rachel Brosnahan, Nicholas Hoult, Nathan Fillion, Wendell Pierce, Edi Gathegi, Skyler Gisondo, and Isabela Merced, among others. The movie flies into theaters on July 11, 2025.
