Thunderbolts*: New Avengers’ Black Ops Suits Revealed in Unused Concept Art

Recently released concept art for the Thunderbolts* film has put three of the six members of the New Avengers in Black Ops suits. While the final cut of the movie opted for a more traditional roster of costumes for all the lead characters, these new concept art images paint an interesting scenario of what could’ve been.

Bucky, Ghost and Red Guardian’s alternate Black Ops suits for Thunderbolts*

Renowned fantasy illustrator Aleksi Briclot recently took to social media to share a new look for the Thunderbolts* characters Bucky Barnes (Winter Soldier), Ava Starr (Ghost), and Alexei Shostakov (Red Guardian), draping the trio in predominantly black super-suits.

Briclot’s latest Instagram post highlighted Sebastian Stan’s character in an all-black outfit, complete with a one-arm leather vest as well as a pair of combat boots. Explaining the ideology behind his Black Ops suit for the said New Avengers member, he noted that he wanted to go “for a dark casual look.” Briclot also clarified his motivation to go with such a discreet look for Bucky, stating that this way, “you couldn’t notice him in the crowd.”

Another Instagram post shared by Briclot featured New Avengers concept art focused on Hannah John-Kamen’s Ghost. She is seen donning a unique Black Ops suit, which differs greatly from that of Bucky.

Instead of a simplistic design, this reimagination of the phasing anti-hero puts Ava Starr in a stealthy costume along with a tactical vest. Briclot remarked that he actually wanted to go for a “BlackOp vibe,” which aligned with the character’s “dramatic development.”

Lastly, the seasoned concept artist also shared an updated look of David Harbour’s Red Guardian, ditching his vibrant white and red costume in favor of a “darker vibe.” Aleksi Briclot hilariously summed up his inspiration behind the revised Black Ops suit for the New Avengers member, noting that he opted for a “less Santa Claus and more Spec Ops” design.

Meanwhile, MCU fans who have yet to watch Marvel’s Thunderbolts*, which premiered on May 1, 2025, can do so by walking into their nearest movie theaters.
