Captain America 4 Director Says Harrison Ford’s Red Hulk Had to Be Spoiled
Captain America 4 director Julius Onah thinks the trailers for the MCU movie had to spoil the Red Hulk reveal.
Marvel Studios’ Captain America 4, also known as Captain America: Brave New World, was released in United States theaters this past February. The movie sees Anthony Mackie reprise his role as Sam Wilson/Captain America, while Harrison Ford plays Thaddeus ‘Thunderbolt’ Ross/Red Hulk.
The trailers and promotional material for Captain America: Brave New World revealed that Ford would transform into Red Hulk at some point during the film. Many fans were surprised, however, that this moment doesn’t actually happen until the end of the movie and is treated like a major twist or reveal.
What did Julius Onah say about Captain America 4 and Red Hulk?
Speaking with Empire Magazine, Onah said he doesn’t think it was an option to keep Red Hulk hidden in the trailers.
Onah said, “When you’re making a movie like this, an announcement goes out that Harrison Ford is going to play Thaddeus Ross, and you have a fandom as massive and as passionate as the MCU fandom is, you’re toast at that point, you know? In a perfect-case scenario, it would have been awesome [if ] that [had been] an in-theatre surprise, but I think it would have been very difficult. Somewhere along the way, a toy would have been found, or somebody would have leaked a trailer. It’s just so hard to keep anything secret in today’s day and age.”
In addition to Mackie and Ford, the cast of the movie includes Danny Ramirez as Joaquin Torres/Falcon, Shira Haas as Ruth Bat-Seraph, Carl Lumbly as Isaiah Bradley, Xosha Roquemore as Leila Taylor, Giancarlo Esposito as Seth Voelker/Sidewinder, Liv Tyler as Betty Ross, and Tim Blake Nelson as Samuel Sterns.
Marvel’s Captain America 4 is now streaming on Disney+.
