F1 Director on Why Tom Cruise Instead of Brad Pitt Would’ve Been Scary

Joseph Kosinski, the director of the upcoming F1 movie, has explained why he decided to cast Brad Pitt in the film instead of Tom Cruise. Despite having collaborated with Cruise on Top Gun: Maverick and Oblivion, the accredited filmmaker noted that recruiting him in the much-awaited Formula 1 movie would have been a frightening proposition.

Joseph Kosinski on why Brad Pitt is the better choice for F1 than Tom Cruise

In a recent interview, Kosinski clarified his choice of not approaching Tom Cruise for his F1 project by saying that seeing the veteran actor in the high-octane setup of a racing movie would have scared him.

While speaking with GQ magazine, the Directors Guild of America Award nominee stated, “Tom always pushes it to the limit, but at the same time is super capable and very skilled. They both [Cruise and Pitt] have the natural talent for driving. But yeah, I could see Tom maybe scaring us a little bit more.”

Graham Kelly, who serves as F1’s action-vehicle supervisor and has also worked with Cruise on several Mission: Impossible installments, echoed Kosinski’s sentiments, remarking, “We’d have had a crash. Tom pushes it to the limit. I mean really to the limit. That terrifies me.”

He further sated, “I mean, I’ve done loads of Mission: Impossibles with Tom, and it’s the most stressful experience for someone like me, building cars for him, doing stunts with him. Whereas Brad listens and he knows his abilities, and I think he’d be the first to say, ‘Yeah, I’m not going to do that.'”

Notably, Kosinski, along with producer Jerry Bruckheimer, commenced development on the F1 movie while the duo was overseeing the post-production phase of Tom Cruise’s Top Gun: Maverick.

Cruise is currently enjoying an impressive run at the box office with the recently released Mission: Impossible — The Final Reckoning. Meanwhile, the Brad Pitt-led F1 will be hitting theaters later this summer on June 27.
