007: New James Bond Movie Gets Disappointing Director Update

The new James Bond movie received another disappointing update involving a potential director.

What is the latest James Bond update concerning a director?

Per World of Reel, Alfonso Cuarón is no longer directing the next James Bond movie. Cuarón emerged as a candidate to direct Bond 26 after comments he made last month suggesting his next project would be 007.

“There is indeed this project under discussion, and I have the desire, if it happens, to revisit this story in my own way,” Cuarón said (via Simon Robert).

Cuarón previously turned down directing a Bond movie after realizing he would rather “watch and not do.”

Cuarón has not helmed a movie since 2018’s Roma, the Mexican drama that received three Oscars, including Best Director. Cuarón’s last major project was 2024’s Disclaimer*, the Apple TV+ limited series he created, wrote, and directed.

Bond 26 will be the first 007 movie from Amazon MGM Studios. In February, Bond’s longtime producers Barbara Broccoli and Michael G. Wilson handed over creative control of the franchise in a deal worth nearly $1 billion. Broccoli and Wilson will remain co-owners of the franchise, but Amazon MGM Studios will now run creative.

Amazon’s first move was hiring Amy Pascal and David Heyman to produce the next Bond movie. Pascal is best known for producing Tom Holland’s Spider-Man movies. While at Sony, Pascal oversaw the production of several Bond entries, including Casino Royale, Quantum of Solace, Skyfall, and Spectre.

Heyman produced every Harry Potter movie, which is noteworthy because Cuarón directed Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban. Heyman also produced Cuarón’s Oscar-winning Gravity.

There is no timeline on how fast Amazon will move to hire a director for Bond 26. More importantly, the studio needs to cast the next actor who will play 007.
