Mamma Mia! 3 Receives Exciting Update, Sabrina Carpenter Role Teased
Could one of the biggest pop stars join a famous movie musical franchise? Per Deadline, Mamma Mia! producer Judy Craymer teased that Sabrina Carpenter could play a role in Mamma Mia! 3.
What role would Sabrina Carpenter play in Mamma Mia! 3?
Craymer, who produced the stage musical and feature film adaptations, discussed a potential third Mamma Mia! When the idea of casting Carpenter was brought up, Craymer suggested who the Espresso singer could play.
“She’d be a goddess or some relation who would look very much like Meryl Streep,” Craymer told Deadline.
Carpenter has not been officially cast in Mamma Mia! 3. However, Carpenter has covered songs from ABBA, the Swedish pop group behind the music for Mamma Mia! Carpenter is also friendly with Amanda Seyfried, the star of the two Mamma Mia! movies.
Mamma Mia! 3 is currently in development. Craymer admits that the third movie has a script, but she has withheld any information about the plot. To Craymer, Mamma Mia! 3 is a matter of when, not if.
“Well, we know what we want to do with the movie, and it will happen,” Craymer said. “And I mean, we brought together this amazing group of movie stars that were all connected through it, and huge friendships evolved.”
Mamma Mia! began as a jukebox musical set to the songs of ABBA. Set on a fictional Greek island, Sophie is preparing to marry her fiancé, Sky. Sophie wants her father to walk her down the aisle, but she does not know him. After reading her mother’s diary, Sophie narrows the list of potential fathers to three men: Sam Carmichael, Harry Bright, and Bill Anderson.
Mamma Mia! is one of the longest-running shows in London’s West End and will return to Broadway starting August 2.
The musical spawned two theatrical film adaptations: 2008’s Mamma Mia! and the sequel, 2018’s Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again. The cast includes Seyfried, Meryl Streep, Pierce Brosnan, Colin Firth, Stellan Skarsgård, Julie Walters, and Dominic Cooper. The two films combined to gross over $1 billion worldwide.
