This Unmade Green Lantern Movie Would’ve Explored His Weakness & Infinite Powers

Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning co-writer and director Christopher McQuarrie discussed details about his scrapped Man of Steel sequel and Green Lantern movie. He claimed that he had figured out how to depict Green Lantern’s powers and weaknesses on the big screen, but the movie did not happen.

Christopher McQuarrie reveals his unmade Green Lantern movie’s premise

McQuarrie spoke about the canceled Man of Steel sequel and Green Lantern movie during an interview with Josh Horowitz of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. When asked about the sequel to Zack Snyder’s 2013 superhero feature, McQuarrie said, “I’ll never tell but boy it was f—ing good!” He added, “Green Lantern was what had come to me.” This effectively confirms that DC approached him to direct a Green Lantern movie as well.

“Green Lantern’s a tough one — the power and the weakness — and I cracked it and it was fun watching him learn and…giving that power a flaw so that it was not pure invincibility,” McQuarrie continued.

According to McQuarrie, the whole concept of Green Lantern revolves around the notion that “the ring has to be recharged and that’s not a bug, that’s a feature.” He then proceeded to tease how those scrapped projects would have explored that idea. “Yes, you have infinite power, but you only have so much battery life that can run out at inconvenient times. That for me solved the whole Green Lantern problem,” the filmmaker elaborated.

McQuarrie acknowledged that the costume of the character was another issue. Notably, the 2011 Green Lantern movie featuring Ryan Reynolds received much criticism for the CGI costume. McQuarrie said they could have found a resolution for it.

McQuarrie mentioned that he figured out that he had to be more concerned about “tension and stakes” over the costume. He disclosed that he and Henry Cavill had discussions. It made him realize how similar Green Lantern and Superman were, giving his plans for the characters “amazing conflict and an amazing universe-expanding resolution.”
