Sarah Michelle Gellar Addresses Scream 7 Status, If She’d Return

Buffy the Vampire Slayer vet Sarah Michelle Gellar has opened up about the possibility of her appearing in Scream 7. Gellar played the role of college student Cici Cooper in the second installment of the popular slasher franchise.

Scream 7 will be led by franchise vets Neve Campbell and Courteney Cox as they reprise their respective fan-favorite roles as Sidney Prescott and Gale Weathers. The next installment will also feature the surprising return of Matthew Lillard, Scott Foley, and David Arquette, who are set to reprise roles as Stu Macher, Roman Bridger, and Dewey Riley despite their characters’ respective deaths in 1996’s Scream, 2000’s Scream 3, and 2022’s Scream. In addition, it has also been confirmed that Scream VI stars Jasmin Savoy Brown’s Mindy Meeks-Martin and Mason Gooding’s Chad Meeks-Martin are also appearing in the next sequel.

Sarah Michelle Gellar talks potential Scream 7 return

During a recent interview with Entertainment Tonight, Gellar admitted that she’s actually been waiting for Scream producers to invite her onto the cast of Scream 7. Her character’s return may seem impossible due to Cici’s death in the 1997 sequel. However, since three dead characters have already been confirmed to appear, she believes that she may also be able to reprise her role.

“I’m not in [Scream 7]. I tried to get in [Scream 7], nobody wanted me,” Gellar shared. “They were bringing everybody back. I kept thinking I would get a call, I didn’t get a call.”

She continued, “There’s a lot of people that died in all the Scream movies that are back. Skeet [Ulrich], [Matthew] Lillard. I’m just saying, I’m waiting for my call.”

Franchise creator Kevin Williamson is directing the seventh installment from a screenplay written by Guy Busick. It is produced by Paul Neinstein, William Sherak, and James Vanderbilt. Joining the returning cast members are franchise newcomers Isabel May (1883), Celeste O’Connor (Madame Web), Asa Germann (The Boys: Gen V), Mckenna Grace (Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire), Joel McHale (Community), Anna Camp (Pitch Perfect), Mark Consuelos (Riverdale), Ethan Embry (Grace & Frankie), Sam Rechner (The Fabelmans), Michelle Randolph (Landman), and Jimmy Tatro (Theater Camp).

The movie is currently slated to arrive in theaters on February 27, 2026.
