Josh O’Connor Teases Character in ‘Old-School Spielberg’ UFO Movie

Emmy winner Josh O’Connor is one of the stars of Steven Spielberg’s UFO movie.

In an interview with Deadline, O’Connor called it “old-school Spielberg,” comparing the film to the director’s earlier sci-fi offerings, including Close Encounters of the Third Kind and E.T. the Extra-Terrestrial.

O’Connor withheld information about the plot. However, O’Connor teased that his character is American and related to Emily Blunt’s character. When asked if the relationship is matrimonial or fraternal, O’Connor avoided answering by pretending to leave the conversation.

How did Josh O’Connor get cast in Steven Spielberg’s UFO movie?

How did O’Connor find himself in a Spielberg movie? It started with a text from his agent on one of the industry’s most star-studded nights.

“About this time last year, I was in New York, and on the night of the Met Gala, I got a text from my agent saying, “Can you meet Steven Spielberg tomorrow for coffee?” And I was like, “Yes!” And I went to his office, Amblin,” O’Connor said. “He told me he didn’t have a script, but he told me the story of the movie and he said, “Would you like to do it?'”

O’Connor joked that he told Spielberg that he’ll “think about it.” In the end, O’Connor accepted the role and worked with Spielberg, someone he calls the “most special person.”

“It was kind of straightforward,” O’Connor said about the casting process. “He’s just the most special person. He seems to have the most incredible amount of energy I’ve ever witnessed. He comes up to you, he whispers in your ear like an excited child about an idea, a thought, and it’s truly inspiring.”

O’Connor and Blunt star in the untitled UFO movie alongside Colin Firth, Eve Hewson, Colman Domingo, and Wyatt Russell.

Spielberg directs from a screenplay by David Koepp.

Spielberg’s UFO movie opens in theaters on June 12, 2026.
