The Batman 2: Andy Serkis Requests 1 Change for Sequel’s Story
Matt Reeves’ The Batman 2 actor Andy Serkis recently shared a change he would like to see in the film’s story. In the franchise’s first outing, Serkis portrayed Alfred Pennyworth, the butler and adoptive guardian of Robert Pattinson’s Bruce Wayne. While his character mostly assisted the Caped Crusader in his vigilantism in 2022’s The Batman, The Lord of the Rings star wants Alfred to assume a more fatherlike role in the sequel.
Andy Serkis talks Alfred and Bruce’s relationship changes in The Batman 2
During his recent appearance at Fan Expo Philadelphia 2025, Andy Serkis opened up about what he expects from the story of The Batman 2, noting that he would really want the character of Alfred Pennyworth to have a “proper paternal feeling” for Bruce.
The 61-year-old actor touched down upon the relationship Alfred shared with Pattinson’s titular character in The Batman, stating, “What I loved about what Matt [Reeves] created in the last one was this sense of a guardian who has not an iota of paternal instinct him, trying to be a father he could never be. And that was really at the core of their relationship.”
Serkis continued, “He really felt he had failed the one person that he adores and tries to look after. He knows how to help him in terms of skills and in terms of cracking cones, and how to fight, and all of those things from being a soldier, from being in the military in his past” (via FandomWire News).
Serkis then highlighted the Bruce-Alfred dynamic that he would want in The Batman 2, remarking, “The one thing that [Alfred] fails to do is to have a real proper paternal feeling for him. And I would like to see the exploration of that deeply and go further. I mean, I don’t know anything about the story or where Matt’s taking him, but I would love to see that taken to the extreme, but in a more extreme situation.”
As for the progress on the much-awaited sequel, a recent report has claimed that director Matt Reeves is very close to finishing the script for The Batman 2. Barring any last-minute hiccups, the movie is expected to arrive in theaters on October 1, 2027.
