Andor Creator Theorizes Why Marvel Movies Are Failing Now
Andor series creator and showrunner Tony Gilroy believes that the steep decline of the MCU movies in recent years is due to narrative repetition. In a recent interview, Gilroy underscored what he thought were the reasons for the failure of Marvel movies while reflecting on how he changed Andor’s scripts from their initial iterations.
Tony Gilroy says Marvel needs to stop ‘trying to get the Tesseract’ to succeed
Gilroy noted in an interview with /Film that the MCU movies failed because they were repeatedly “trying to get the Tesseract,” though he initially could not remember the name of the fictional object. He asked the outlet, “Trying to get the, what do they call it? I can’t remember the name of the box. What the f— is the name of the box in The Avengers? What the f— are they going for?”
When the interviewer correctly supplied the name of the object in question, Gilroy continued, “The Tesseract! That’s why all those Marvel movies are all — that’s why they fail. You’re just constantly … if that’s all you’re doing, then all you’re doing is just trying to get the Tesseract.”
The criticism that Marvel movies regularly follow the same formula isn’t necessarily new, and it has often been linked to the critical and commercial failures of several recent entries in the franchise. Meanwhile, Gilroy’s comment comes in the context of Andor and why his version of the story was so different from previous renditions.
The original versions of the scripts reportedly revolve around Diego Luna’s Cassian Andor and Alan Tudyk’s K-2SO as they traverse across the galaxy and embark on new adventures every episode. After Gilroy came on board, he apparently changed that and introduced K-2SO toward the end of the series. “That’s something I always intended,” he told /Film. Gilroy observed that even though earlier versions were “slick” and “interesting,” those scripts had a “fatal flaw.” He continued, “It seemed to me, which is if that’s your show, that we’re going to storm the Citadel in the pilot, what are you going to do in episode 9? What do you do?”
Notably, Andor Season 2 concluded on May 13, 2025.
