Mission: Impossible 8’s Tom Cruise on if Final Reckoning Is the Last Movie
Tom Cruise reflected on whether Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning will serve as the final chapter in the franchise during a new interview. The franchise began in 1996 with Mission: Impossible, helmed by Brian De Palma, and has since become one of the most successful film series of all time, garnering positive responses from both critics and the general audience.
Tom Cruise says ‘you don’t call’ Mission: Impossible 8 ‘final for nothing’
Tom Cruise seemingly confirmed that Mission: Impossible 8 would be the concluding entry in the franchise. When Entertainment Tonight asked that question at The Final Reckoning’s U.K. premiere, the Hollywood icon replied, “Well, they don’t call it final for nothing,” effectively confirming that the eighth entry would also be the last one of the franchise.
Previously, Cruise stated that he wanted to play Ethan Hunt until he was much older, the same way Harrison Ford had essayed the role of Indiana Jones.
The Mission: Impossible film series is based on the 1966 CBS TV show of the same name. After De Palma, John Woo directed Mission: Impossible 2 (2000), J. J. Abrams helmed Mission: Impossible III (2006), and Brad Bird directed Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011). Afterward, Christopher McQuarrie took over the directorial duties and helmed Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015), Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018), Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023), and The Final Reckoning.
Besides Cruise, the cast of the latest feature includes Hayley Atwell as Grace, Ving Rhames as Luther, Simon Pegg as Benji, Henry Czerny as Eugene, and more. Besides directing, McQuarrie penned the script with Erik Jendresen.
Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning, which has already been released in several countries, is set to come out in U.S. theaters on May 23, 2025. At the time of this article’s composition, the movie has an 80% approval rating on the review aggregator site Rotten Tomatoes after 183 reviews. Additionally, it has a score of 69 out of 100 after 45 reviews on Metacritic, which uses a weighted average to rate projects, denoting a ‘Generally Favorable’ response.
