Jai Courtney Gives Hopeful Update on Captain Boomerang’s DCU Return
Jai Courtney teased in a recent interview that fans might not have seen the last of his rendition of George “Digger” Harkness / Captain Boomerang. Courtney previously portrayed the Australian supervillain in Suicide Squad (2016) and The Suicide Squad (2021). Although Boomerang survives in the first movie, he remains in governmental custody by the time it ends. He dies a horrible death in the second feature, but Courtney gave a hopeful update about his character’s potential return in the DC Universe.
Jai Courtney still wants to return as Captain Boomerang in DCU
Courtney gave a new interview, in which he spoke about an interaction between him and writer-director James Gunn after he learned about his character’s fate in The Suicide Squad. Courtney recalled telling Gunn, who is also the co-head of the DC Studios now, that “Boomerang is cool.” This prompted Gunn to tell him, “You know these rules don’t really apply. Just because he dies here doesn’t mean it’s gone forever, right?” According to Courtney, this gave him hope. (via Variety)
“And I was like, ‘Hell yeah.’ So I have hope,” the actor explained. “Somewhere in the back of my mind, there’s a prayer that we’ll see more of Boomerang one day,” he further stated.
In the same interview, Courtney drew parallels between Captain Boomerang and Tucker, his serial killer character in the 2025 Australian survival horror feature Dangerous Animals. Courtney revealed that David Ayer, the director of the 2016 movie, told him to find his “inner s—bag” to play Boomerang. “I was doing some weird stuff in prep. I remember taking mushrooms and burning myself with cigarettes,” the actor divulged. “I was just getting into a weird space with it. I’m all for a bit of experimentation with some ancient plant medicine. Why not?”
This isn’t the first time that Courtney discussed his potential return as Captain Boomerang. He told ComicBook in September 2024 that he was interested in playing the character again.
