Jeremy Renner on Why He Didn’t Return for Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
Jeremy Renner explained during a new interview why his Mission: Impossible character, William Brandt, isn’t in the eighth entry in the franchise, The Final Reckoning. Notably, Renner played William in Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol (2011) and Mission: Impossible – Rogue Nation (2015). However, he was not part of the cast of Mission: Impossible – Fallout (2018) and Mission: Impossible – Dead Reckoning Part One (2023).
Why Jeremy Renner’s William Brandt isn’t in Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning
Jeremy Renner disclosed that fatherhood was the reason for his decision to walk away from the Tom Cruise-led Mission: Impossible franchise during an interview with Josh Horowitz of the Happy Sad Confused podcast. The Mayor of Kingstown actor and Horowitz were discussing the Marvel Cinematic Universe and Renner’s involvement in it as Clint Barton / Hawkeye.
Horowitz brought up Renner’s newly published book, My Next Breath, leading to a discussion about the actor’s “willingness to step away” from projects. This was when Renner spoke about why he hadn’t appeared in the recent Mission: Impossible movies.
Renner explained that he had to “walk away” from Tom Cruise and the Mission: Impossible movies because of his responsibilities to his daughter, Ava Berlin Renner. He added, “I love Tom, and I love doing those movies. So fun! But I couldn’t. I had to really be a dad. They’re still shooting seven and eight right now.” Renner said that he recently spoke to one of the stuntmen attached to the franchise, and he told him the production took five years.
The Arrival star continued, “I have to be a dad. I can’t go do that, right? And God bless him [Cruise], and I love him. I wish I could do that. I just can’t. I love the choice I made. I love being a dad. It’s the best role I’ve ever had and always will have.”
Over a year ago, Renner said on the same podcast that the filmmakers approached him to make a cameo appearance in Fallout. However, he refused because his character was supposed to die after a brief appearance in the movie (via Variety).
