James Foley Passes Away, Glengarry Glen Ross Director Was 71

James Foley has passed away. The Glengarry Glen Ross director was 71 years old.

Other notable works that Foley made throughout his career include At Close Range, Fifty Shades Darker, Fifty Shades Freed, and more.

According to Deadline, Foley passed away earlier this week following a yearlong battle with brain cancer.

Foley was born in Brooklyn, New York, on December 28, 1953. He made his feature film directorial debut in 1984, which was written by Chris Columbus and stars Aidan Quinn, Daryl Hannah, Kenneth McMillan, and more.

He followed that up by directing Madonna’s “Dress You Up” music video in 1985. Foley worked with Madonna a number of times throughout his career, as he also directed music videos for “Live to Tell,” “Papa Don’t Preach,” “True Blue,” “The Look of Love,” and more.

Foley made his second feature film, At Close Range, in 1986. Following 1990’s After Dark, My Sweet, he then made 1992’s Glengarry Glen Ross, a well-known film that stars Al Pacino, Jack Lemmon, Alec Baldwin, Ed Harris, and more. Glengarry Glen Ross earned Pacino a Best Supporting Oscar nomination that year, among other accolades.

Foley helmed a handful of other movies after that — 1995’s Two Bits, 1996’s Fear, 1996’s The Chamber, 1999’s The Corruptor, 2003’s Confidence, 2007’s Perfect Stranger, and 2007’s Reel Talent — before he largely began to focus on television, though he did direct an episode of David Lynch’s Twin Peaks in 1991. He worked on shows such as Hannibal, House of Cards, Wayward Pines, and Billions.

In his later years, Foley directed the two final films in the Fifty Shades of Grey franchise, Fifty Shades Darker and Fifty Shades Freed, with Dakota Johnson and Jamie Dornan.

“He is survived by brother Kevin Foley, sisters Eileen and Jo Ann Foley, and nephew Quinn Foley and their respective spouses,” Deadline’s article notes. “He was predeceased by another brother, Gerard Foley.”
