Predator: Badlands Trailer Review: In Dan Trachtenberg We Trust

The first trailer for Predator: Badlands has arrived, meaning it’s time to review it and talk about what we’re expecting from the upcoming sequel. The new movie, which will be released in United States theaters this coming November, stars Elle Fanning and Dimitrius Schuster-Koloamatangi.

Predator: Badlands trailer review

Let’s state the obvious, first: Predator: Badlands looks like it’s going to be a big swing.

It’s a big swing because we’ve never seen a Predator movie quite like this. Judging by the footage and some of director Dan Trachtenberg’s past comments, it appears that one of the Yautja will actually be the protagonist of the movie, whom Fanning’s character assists along the way.

Again, a big swing, although not completely out of the blue, as the Yautja served as the heroes (or antiheroes, at least) of the Alien vs. Predator franchise. Then again, I don’t blame anyone for trying to erase those films from their memory, as the first one is, mmm, passable, and the second one is quite simply not even remotely good.

Having said that, Predator: Badlands will be the seventh installment in the Predator series following June’s Predator: Killer of Killers. It’s time for something different. I’m a fan of the original Predator movie, and I think Predator 2 has its moments. I’m perhaps more fond of 2010’s Predators than the average movie-goer (it came out at the perfect time when I was a teenager and was totally into this stuff), but then I did not care for Shane Black’s The Predator. We’re at the point where we need to take some big swings.

Trachtenberg has proved he can do “different” before. Prey was a welcome and refreshing look at the franchise, showing how a different setting can breathe new life into this franchise. He seems to have some kind of master plan for the Predator series, and, given how good Prey was, I’m inclined to trust him. I have no idea where this movie is going to go or what surprises are in store, but I’m ready for the journey it’s going to bring me on

RATING

Rating: 4 out of 5.
