Sinners Gets Support From Ben Stiller After Its Box Office Gets Criticized
Actor and filmmaker Ben Stiller has come out in support of Ryan Coogler’s gothic horror feature Sinners, slamming the reporting around the movie’s box office performance. Notably, Sinners premiered in U.S. theaters on April 18, 2025, and accumulated over $60 million globally in its opening weekend.
Ben Stiller slams critical statement on Sinners’ strong box office opening
Stiller recently took to X (formerly Twitter) to criticize how Sinners’ commercial outing is being reported. Quoting the post of a well-known outlet in the subject, the Tropic Thunder director asked, “In what universe does a 60 million dollar opening for an original studio movie warrant this headline?”
This came after several outlets wondered in their respective articles whether Sinners would be commercially successful. Notably, Sinners topped the domestic box office with a $48 million opening. The movie reportedly has a $90 million production budget. According to some outlets, the movie has to make $170–185 million to break even. However, other publications state that the breaking-even number is significantly higher than that.
As Stiller notes in his post, Sinners is an original project developed by Coogler from a script he himself penned. In a time when projects that are backed by existing intellectual properties often get the favor of both the studio and the audience, the debut weekend performance of Sinners’ is quite commendable. If the movie continues to hold the current momentum at the global office, it can potentially become commercially successful.
Further, Sinners has an impressive 98% approval rating on the review aggregating site Rotten Tomatoes after 275 professional reviews and a score of 84 out of 100 after 54 critics’ reviews on Metacritic, which uses a weighted average to rate a movie. If the word of mouth and reports of the movie’s impressive performance with the critics continue to spread, Sinners can even improve upon its initial performance in the coming weekends.
The cast of Sinners includes Michael B. Jordan, Hailee Steinfeld, Miles Caton, Jack O’Connell, and Wunmi Mosaku.
