Based on a True Story Season 3: Kaley Cuoco Series Canceled After 2 Seasons

Peacock has officially canceled the true-crime satire Based on a True Story after two seasons, ending any plans for Season 3. Executive producer and showrunner Annie Weisman previously expressed interest in continuing the story, noting unresolved plotlines and character arcs. Although Season 2 ended on a major cliffhanger, the streamer opted not to move forward with a third season.

Kaley Cuoco-led Based on a True Story canceled by Peacock before Season 3

According to Variety, Peacock has canceled Based on a True Story after two seasons.

A spokesperson confirmed that the streaming platform has canceled the show, which Craig Rosenberg created and Kaley Cuoco, Jason Bateman, and Michael Costigan, among others, executive-produced.

The show debuted in June 2023 and wrapped its second season in November 2024, totaling 16 episodes. In Season 1, Ava Bartlett (Kaley Cuoco) and her husband Nathan (Chris Messina) capitalized on their encounter with a serial killer by launching a true-crime podcast.

Season 2 introduced Paige, a copycat killer who kidnapped the couple before Matt, the original killer, intervened. The season ended with Matt escaping and authorities wrongfully arresting Nathan.

Annie Weisman took over as showrunner in Season 2 after Rosenberg stepped down but remained as executive producer. Weisman told TVLine in November 2024, “It feels like there is more story — the potential of either [Matt and Paige] teaming up, or a fight to the death between them. We’ll have to wait and see, but they’re definitely not done yet.”

The series received largely positive reviews from critics, with praise directed mainly toward the performances and writing, among other things. Despite the positive critical reception, Peacock opted not to renew it. The platform does not release viewership figures.
