Puss in Boots: The Last Wish director Joel Crawford has found his next project.
Crawford and co-director Januel Mercado previously made 2022’s Puss in Boots: The Last Wish. A sequel to 2011’s Puss in Boots, which is a spin-off of the Shrek series, the animated movie turned out to be a massive hit, making $485 million at the worldwide box office. It was also nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 95th Academy Awards.

Per The Hollywood Reporter, Crawford has been tapped to direct a new animated movie for Universal Pictures and DreamWorks Animation titled Forgotten Island. The film has been given a September 25, 2026, release date.
“The film is described as a broad party comedy adventure that transports the film’s protagonists to a long-forgotten, magical island rooted in Philippine mythology,” The Hollywood Reporter’s article reads.
Further plot details remain under wraps at this time.
Mercado will also write and direct Forgotten Island alongside Crawford. Mark Swift will serve as producer.
Prior to Puss in Boots: The Last Wish, Crawford directed 2020’s The Croods: A New Age, also known as The Croods 2. He has additionally worked on a story artist on projects such as 2007’s Bee Movie, 2008’s Kung Fu Panda, 2010’s Shrek Forever After, 2012’s Rise of the Guardians, 2015’s The SpongeBob Movie: Sponge Out of Water, 2016’s Trolls, 2019’s The Lego Movie 2: The Second Part, and more.
No other movies are currently dated for September 25, 2026. The DCU Clayface movie will be released about two weeks before, on September 11, while Zach Cregger’s Resident Evil movie follows on September 18.
