Home Alone 2 Director Wants To Cut Donald Trump Cameo: ‘It’s Become This Curse’
Director Chris Columbus has opened up about 1992’s Home Alone 2, and how he wishes that he could cut one of its most infamous cameos from the film.
What did Chris Columbus say about Home Alone 2’s Donald Trump cameo?
In a recent interview with the San Francisco Chronicle, Columbus responded to comments President of the United States Donald Trump made in 2023. Years ago, Columbus said that Trump only appeared in the movie because he wouldn’t let the film use his Plaza Hotel otherwise.
Trump responded in a Truth Social post in 2023, claiming that Columbus was “begging” him to be in the movie, and he had no initial desire to. Although Columbus stayed quiet since, he recently said that the scene has since become a “curse,” and is something he wishes he could get rid of in the movie.
“Years later, it’s become this curse. It’s become this thing that I wish it was not there. What’s going through this guy’s mind?” said Columbus. “He said I was lying. I’m not lying. He said I begged him to be in the movie, but there’s no world I would ever beg a non-actor to be in a movie. But we were desperate to get the Plaza Hotel.”
“But it’s there. It’s become an albatross for me. I just wish it was gone.”
Columbus also recalled noting that the film’s audience loved the cameo when they screened the movie in Chicago in 1992, something he found quite shocking.
“We screened the film in Chicago, and when that moment came onscreen the audience went crazy,” Columbus said. “They cheered and they cheered and they thought it was hilarious. I think I know a lot about comedy, but I don’t, obviously, because I never thought that was going to be considered hilarious.
Home Alone 2: Lost in New York was released in 1992, and was a smash hit upon its release. The film grossed over $359 million worldwide at the box office, and was the third-highest grossing film of 1992.
