Godzilla Minus One 2 Gets Sequel Update, Production Start Date Revealed

Godzilla Minus One 2, the sequel to the Academy Award-winning Godzilla movie, received an exciting update about the story details and a potential start date for production.

What is the Godzilla Minus One 2 update?

Per Bloomberg Japan, Toho, the studio behind Godzilla, is investing 120 billion yen ($1.2 billion) over the next three years to expand its global reach. A portion of that money will be invested in the Godzilla franchise, which includes a direct sequel to Godzilla Minus One. Production could begin as early as late 2025.

In November, Toho announced that Takashi Yamazaki, the writer and director of Godzilla Minus One, would return to write, direct, and handle the VFX on another Godzilla movie. At the Visual Effects Awards in February, Yamazaki revealed that he’s working on storyboards and a screenplay for his new Godzilla movie. Yamazaki also said the film would have a bigger budget.

Yamazaki is also scheduled to direct Grandgear for Bad Robot Productions. This marks his first English-language feature film.

Godzilla Minus One became the 37th film in the Godzilla franchise and Toho’s 33rd involving the titular kaiju. “Post war Japan is at its lowest point when a new crisis emerges in the form of a giant monster, baptized in the horrific power of the atomic bomb,” reads the official synopsis of the film.

Godzilla Minus One starred Ryunosuke Kamiki as Kōichi Shikishima, Minami Hamabe as Noriko Ōishi, Yuki Yamada as Shirō Mizushima, Munetaka Aoki as Sōsaku Tachibana, Hidetaka Yoshioka as Kenji Noda, Sakura Ando as Sumiko Ōta, and Kuranosuke Sasaki as Seiji Akitsu.

Released in November 2023, Godzilla Minus One received nearly universal acclaim and is now considered one of the best Godzilla movies ever. Godzilla Minus One grossed more than $115 million at the global box office on a budget of approximately $10 million. The film won Best Visual Effects at the 96th Academy Awards.
