Thunderbolts* Actor on How Ghost Has Changed Since Ant-Man and the Wasp
Hannah John-Kamen, who plays Ava Starr / Ghost in the Marvel Cinematic Universe and is all set to reprise her role in the upcoming superhero feature Thunderbolts*, reflected on how her character has changed since her initial appearance in Ant-Man and the Wasp. Ghost served as an antagonist in the 2018 release and left with Laurence Fishburne’s Bill Foster, who was a father figure in her life, toward the end of the movie.
Hannah John-Kamen says Ghost is very ‘dangerous’ in her new Thunderbolts* suit
John-Kamen and other members of the Thunderbolts* cast discussed their movie and their respective characters in an interview with Fandango. The SAS: Red Notice actress referred to her character as a “lone wolf,” indicating that Ghost had been operating by herself in the intermediate period in the MCU timeline between Ant-Man and the Wasp and Thunderbolts*. She perhaps even did a few missions for Julia Louis-Dreyfus’ Valentina before encountering other future members of Thunderbolts*.
While answering a question about how her character has evolved, John-Kamen noted, “She’s alone…She’s very much a lone wolf, and she’s very much stubborn with that. It’s going to be a very difficult job to be around people and to be around ‘these’ people.” The actress then mentioned that Ghost has a new suit in Thunderbolts* that she (John-Kamen) named “Gertrude.” She elaborated that the suit was from Berlin and its theme song was Rammstein’s 1997 song, Du Hast.
John-Kamen underscored that Ghost in Thunderbolts* was no longer as volatile as she was in Ant-Man and the Wasp. “I’ve got this whole, different stance as Ghost,” the actress stated. “She’s not vulnerable, she’s not shaking, she’s not an open nerve of fearing her death,” John-Kamen disclosed, adding that this is because of the quantum energy that Michelle Pfeiffer’s Janet Van Dyne gave Ghost. “It’s this kind of control… which was this healing, where she’s stronger than ever, which is dangerous,” she added.
Thunderbolts* premieres in U.S. theaters on May 2, 2025.
