Darren Aronofsky Says ‘I Hate Method Actors’ After Filming New Austin Butler Movie

Darren Aronofsky recently took “method actors” to task, saying that he hates working with them in a bit of an ironic statement.

What did Darren Aronofsky say about method actors?

While attending a masterclass held in Paris over the weekend (via Variety), the Black Swan director said that he is no fan of the exercise.

“I hate Method actors,” said Aronofsky, who said that the practice is “just something to hide behind, as opposed to doing the work and being professional.”

Ironically, Aronofsky just recently worked with Austin Butler on his upcoming film Caught Stealing. Butler is known for being a method actor and staying in character for stretches after filming. The iconic director went on to explain his reason for disliking method acting, noting that acting is simply “make believe.”

“[By all means,] do a tremendous amount of research and really work hard, but acting’s make believe,” Aronofsky said. “If you’re going to do an intense scene, [there’s nothing wrong with] keeping yourself isolated, focused and ready in between takes to maintain that emotion. It’s a sport, a game — only, to be a great basketball player, you don’t have to be dribbling all the time. That’s not how it works. You do your homework, and get yourself ready. It’s only a fake reality between action and cut.”

While Aronofsky didn’t specifically mention Butler by name, he did walk back of the comments. Later in his talk, he mentioned that he doesn’t mind if actors go full method, as long as it isn’t a big drain on the rest of the production.

“It’s fine if that’s how [these actors] want to spend their time,” Aronofsky said. “But I just encourage them to relax a bit!”
