Alan Cumming Talks Reprising Nightcrawler Role in Avengers: Doomsday
Alan Cumming is thrilled to be returning as X-Men’s Nightcrawler in Avengers: Doomsday.
Cumming played Kurt Wagner/Nightcrawler in 2003’s X2, also known as X2: X-Men United. He didn’t return for any of the following X-Men sequels; however, it was recently announced that Cumming will reprise his role in Marvel’s Avengers: Doomsday.
What did Alan Cumming say about reprising his Nightcrawler role for Avengers: Doomsday?
Cumming discussed returning as Nightcrawler during an interview on Today With Jenna and Friends, via Variety.
“Isn’t it nuts? I’m excited and amazed,” he said. “It’s been 23 years since I was a superhero. I’ve had some makeup tests already for the role, but what’s great about it was that before it was about four and a half hours to apply it, but now it’s only 90 minutes.”
He continued, “Before, all of the tattoos were done by hand. They hadn’t decided on them before we started filming. Now, they just stick onto my face. It’s a game-changer. I’m going back to being a 60-year-old superhero, and everyone seems really lovely.”
Cumming isn’t the only actor from the Fox X-Men movies who will star in Avengers: Doomsday. The cast of the movie includes Kelsey Grammer as Hank McCoy/Beast, Patrick Stewart as Charles Xavier/Professor X, Ian McKellen as Erik Lehnsherr/Magneto, Rebecca Romijin as Raven Darkhölme/Mystique, and James Marsden as Scott Summers/Cyclops. Additionally, Channing Tatum is returning as Remy LeBeau/Gambit after debuting as the character in Deadpool & Wolverine.
Many other MCU actors will also appear in Avengers: Doomsday, which is being directed by Joe and Anthony Russo, also known as the Russo Brothers. Plot details remain under wraps at this time.
Marvel Studios’ Avengers: Doomsday will be released in United States theaters on May 1, 2026. Avengers: Secret Wars, which is also being directed by the Russos, then follows on May 7, 2027.
