A24 Bloodsport Remake in Talks, Jean-Claude Van Damme Involvement Clarified

A24 is reportedly in talks to acquire the rights to a Bloodsport remake according to a new report from The InSneider’s Jeff Sneider, who also shed some light on the potential involvement of Jean-Claude Van Damme.

According to Sneider’s report, A24 is currently in negotiations to acquire the rights to the project. The move comes as A24 looks to continue growing its catalog of projects, with a relatively limited portfolio of IP to pick from.

The report doesn’t officially mention any concrete plans for who would direct the Bloodsport remake, but it does touch on Van Damme’s involvement.

Is Jean-Claude Van Damme in the Bloodsport remake?

For those hoping that the legendary action star will be returning for a remake, don’t get your hopes up. Sneider’s report notes that A24’s plans are to “completely reboot” the property, meaning Van Damme likely won’t be a part of it. The report goes on to mention that, once A24 closes on the deal, they plan to link up with an “elevated” action director and find a young actor to lead the project.

Originally released in 1988, Bloodsport was directed by Newt Arnold and starred Van Damme, Leah Ayres, Forest Whitaker, Donald Gibb, Roy Chiao, and Bolo Yeung. The movie follows the story of a United States Army Captain who competes in an underground, full-contact martial arts tournament called the Kumite.
