First reactions to Michael B. Jordan-led Sinners say it is ‘scary’ and ‘sexy’
The Just Mercy actor has reunited with director Ryan Coogler to tell this vampire terror tale based in the 1930s, after they collaborated on movies like Black Panther and Creed.
The story of Sinners revolves around two twin brothers, Smoke and Stack, both played by Michael B. Jordan, who “return to their hometown to start again” but are greeted by evil vampire forces. Recently, Sinners premiered in New York, and the movie’s first reactions suggest that critics are loving it. Critics specifically lauded the film for being scary, gory, and sexy.
BJ Colangelo of Slash Film praised Coogler and wrote, “Ryan Coogler has solidified his place as one of the greats (more than he already has) with #Sinners. As good as you think it’s going to be, it’s better. Scary, SEXY, and social commentary with a hell of a bite.”
Meanwhile, critic Peter Gray complimented the performances by the star cast. He wrote, “Sinners is exactly the vampire joint you’d expect Ryan Coogler to make. The way he interweaves music to make it its own character is masterful. Michael B. Jordan is superb, Jack O’Connell enjoyably unsettling, Hailee Steinfeld a minx in the best way. Gory, horny, relevant.”
Liam T Crowley of Screen Rant called Sinners the “best film of the year” and further stated, “Coogler + Michael B. got the sauce to a level you can’t fathom. Every music number had me breathless – especially that oner. Shoutout authentic Irish tunes one time. WB has a hot new, *original* franchise on its hands.”
Moreover, NBP Podcast’s Matt Neglia referred to the movie as a “one-of-a-kind cinematic experience.” He applauded the background score and visuals of the movie and said, “Michael B. Jordan delivers an effortlessly cool dual performance.”
Lastly, critic Rachel Leishman described Sinners as a “masterpiece” and wrote, “I can talk about #Sinners now! Holy shit! I sat up on the edge of my seat at one point and cannot stop thinking about it. Truly a masterpiece and Ryan Coogler is doing it like none other.”
