How to Train Your Dragon 2 Release Date & Logo for Live-Action Sequel Revealed

With the live-action How to Train Your Dragon set to premiere this summer, Universal confirmed the release date for its sequel during CinemaCon 2025 and also shared its official logo. The live-action adaptation of How to Train Your Dragon 2 will arrive in theaters in mid-2027. Director Dean DeBlois returns, alongside cast members Mason Thames as Hiccup and Nico Parker as Astrid.

How to Train Your Dragon 2 remake is set to be released on June 11, 2027. The studio shared the news during its CinemaCon presentation at Caesars Palace in Las Vegas on April 2, 2025. The sequel will follow the first live-action How to Train Your Dragon, which opens on June 13, 2025.

Dean DeBlois, director of the original animated trilogy and the upcoming live-action films, will return as director, writer, and producer. During the presentation, DeBlois said, “We are so excited to give your theaters a big summer title in two years time” (via Variety).

Gerard Butler and Nico Parker joined Dean DeBlois on stage. Butler plays the role of Stoick the Vast whilst Parker plays a love interest of Stoick’s son, Hiccup. Mason Thames, who portrays Hiccup, also returns for the sequel.

Earlier in the day, Universal screened the full live-action remake for CinemaCon attendees, who responded enthusiastically. Parker thanked the audience for attending the world premiere and creating such a “special memory” for the cast.

A 43-piece orchestra, conducted by Ricky Minor, closed the presentation with Scottish-themed music from the film’s score. The original 2014 animated How to Train Your Dragon 2 followed Hiccup and Toothless as they uncovered a plot to create a dragon army. The live-action sequel will follow a similar storyline set five years after the events of the first film.

The animated trilogy, directed by DeBlois, reportedly grossed $1.65 billion at the global box office and received four Academy Award nominations. The live-action films are based on DreamWorks Animation’s original trilogy, beginning with the 2010 animated movie.
