Rust Trailer: First Footage of Alec Baldwin Western Revealed After Tragic Set Shooting

The first trailer for Rust has been revealed.

Rust is a Western movie written and directed by Joel Souza that stars Alec Baldwin as an aging outlaw named Harland Rust. The production of the film resulted in the death of cinematographer Halyna Hutchins, who was tragically killed when a live round was discharged from a prop gun that Baldwin was using in 2021.

What happens in the Rust trailer?

The Rust trailer sees Patrick Scott McDermott playing an orphan, Lucas McCalister, who accidentally kills a rancher who “is sentenced to hang,” per the official plot description, via Variety, in Kansas during the 1880s.

“In a twist of fate, his estranged grandfather, the notorious outlaw Harland Rust (Baldwin), breaks him out of jail and takes him on the run toward Mexico,” the description continues. “As they flee across the unforgiving wilderness, the fugitive pair must outrun the determined U.S. Marshal Wood Helm (Josh Hopkins) and a ruthless bounty hunter named Preacher (Travis Fimmel).”

Baldwin was charged with involuntary manslaughter following the accident; however, “the case was dismissed in July on the grounds that the prosecution had failed to turn over evidence.” Armorer Hannah Gutierrez-Reed is currently serving an 18-month sentence.

Filming was put on hiatus for Rust following Hutchins’ death, though it later resumed in 2023. Rust held its world premiere at Polan’s Camerimage Festival in November 2024. Baldwin did not attend the premiere.

According to PEOPLE, Rust will be released in select movie theaters in the United States and on Digital on May 2, 2025.

“Rust is a heartfelt and emotional story forged in the struggles of the new frontier — a story of the ripples that a single violent act can send through generations and the hard-fought redemption to be found in a world where the line between good and evil can often be unclear,” Rust Movie Productions LLC’s Melina Spadone said in a statement.
