Jason Bourne Reboot Possible as Universal Loses Rights to Matt Damon Movie Franchise

After over two decades since Universal Pictures started its Jason Bourne franchise with 2002’s The Bourne Identity, the studio no longer owns the rights to the Matt Damon movie franchise. On behalf of Robert Ludlum’s estate, WME is shopping the rights to the Jason Bourne franchise, as well as the rest of the late author’s works.

Which studios could potentially acquire the Jason Bourne reboot?

Skydance, Apple Studios, and Netflix have reportedly expressed their interest in acquiring the rights to the Jason Bourne franchise, as they have said to have already met with the Robert Ludlum estate. It’s currently unclear if any of the said studios have already given an offer, but for now, there’s still a possibility that Universal Pictures could make a great bid that could win the rights back to them.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, the estate’s goal is to reboot the Jason Bourne franchise in order for the iconic superspy to become “a more regular presence onscreen.” This comes after nearly a decade since Damon had last played the character in 2016’s Jason Bourne movie, which served as one of the franchise’s highest-grossing installments with a worldwide gross of $415 million at the box office. Despite this, the 2016 movie became the lowest-rated installment of the franchise, as it only received a Tomatometer score of 55% on Rotten Tomatoes.

The Jason Bourne series first exploded onto cinemas way back in 2002 with Doug Liman’s The Bourne Identity, which centered around a man suffering from amnesia who must put the pieces of his life back together while using his exceptional fighting skills to thwart a CIA conspiracy. Due to its critical and commercial success, it spawned three more sequels and a Jeremy Renner-led spin-off titled The Bourne Legacy.
