Amanda Seyfried Thought Guardians of the Galaxy Would Bomb & Rejected It

Amanda Seyfried recently reflected on turning down the role of Gamora in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. She recently explained that doubts about the film’s potential and concerns over the makeup process influenced her decision. Her comments offer insight into casting choices and early views of Marvel’s lesser-known properties.

Amanda Seyfried on why she rejected Gamora role in Guardians of the Galaxy

In an appearance on the Happy Sad Confused podcast, Amanda Seyfried said, “I definitely got the offer for it and I mulled over it for a couple days.” She explained her hesitation about the makeup process and filming commitment, stating, “I was really scared of the idea of being stuck and painted a different color… I didn’t want to live in London for six months out of the year.”

Seyfried also revealed concerns about the film’s potential success, adding, “I thought that because this was about a talking tree and a talking raccoon that it would be Marvel’s first bomb and me and Chris Pratt would never work again.” She elaborated that being part of a failed Marvel film “ain’t good for your career.” At the time, she opted instead to work on A Million Ways to Die in the West with Seth MacFarlane.

The actress emphasized that she made the choice based on where she was in her career at the time and personal preferences. “I had done some green screen stuff and it wasn’t my cup of tea then… I made that decision for myself. It was good for me then and it was good for me now,” she said. Seyfried added, “I was at a precarious moment in my career and I didn’t want to suffer for the work.”

Guardians of the Galaxy went on to gross over $772 million worldwide. Zoé Saldaña portrayed Gamora in the original 2014 film, as well as its sequels and other MCU titles. Saldaña has since announced she has no plans to return as Gamora but expressed hope the character continues with a new actress, stating in a recent interview with Variety, “I hope a woman of color or a woman with special needs can take on the role next.”
