Avengers: Secret Wars Will ‘Draw Inspiration’ From Both Marvel Comics Series

Avengers: Secret Wars will draw inspiration from both the 1980s and the 2010s Marvel Comics storyline.

Joe and Anthony Russo, also known as the Russo Brothers, are working on two new MCU Avengers movies for Marvel Studios: Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars. The former will come out in 2026, while the latter arrives roughly one year later in 2027.

Plot details for both movies remain largely under wraps at this time; however, the “Secret Wars” title has been used before in Marvel Comics.

Secret Wars was originally a 12-issue crossover limited series that ran from 1984 to 1985. Coming from Jim Shooter, Mike Zeck, and Bob Layton, the storyline sees a number of Marvel characters transported to a place called Battleworld, a planet where the heroes and villains all have to fight one another.

Then, Jonathan Hickman and Esad Ribić created a new Secret Wars for Marvel Comics that launched in 20215. That series sees a new Battleworld planet, which Doctor Doom seizes control of, created after an incursion.

What did the Russo Brothers say about Avengers: Secret Wars?

While it was largely assumed that Avengers: Secret Wars would be based on the 2010s series more so than the 1980s crossover, the Russo Brothers told TechRadar that they’ll be drawing inspiration from both events.

“Well, we always create our own version of the story,” Joe said. “So, we use the comics as loose inspiration. But, you know, I grew up on the original run. That’s something that got me into Marvel comic books. The Hickman run is also fantastic [and they’re] very different from each other in a lot of ways, so we’ll draw inspiration from both of them.”

Avengers: Doomsday will be released on May 1, 2026, from Marvel Studios. Avengers: Secret Wars follows on May 7, 2027.
