Giancarlo Esposito Addresses Potential Star Wars Return as Moff Gideon
Giancarlo Esposito is hoping he’ll be able to reprise his Star Wars role as Moff Gideon for some future project.
Esposito played Moff Gideon in Disney+’s The Mandalorian, which premiered in 2019 and has run for three seasons. His character may have died during the finale of The Mandalorian Season 3, though whether or not that moment truly marks the end of Moff Gideon remains to be seen.
What did Giancarlo Esposito say about potentially reprising his Star Wars role?
Speaking with Empire Magazine, Esposito said he would gladly reprise his Star Wars role for an upcoming Lucasfilm project; although, he “can’t say” whether or not he’ll be in The Mandalorian & Grogu.
“There is a big movie coming out that’s focusing on Mando and The Child. I can’t say it’ll be that,” Esposito said. “But I hope to be able to join that franchise again, because I think there’s more road for Moff Gideon.”
Directed by Jon Favreau, The Mandalorian & Grogu is a forthcoming movie that will serve as a continuation of The Mandalorian. It will star Pedro Pascal, Sigourney Weaver, Jeremy Allen White, and Jonny Coyne. The film is scheduled to be released in United States theaters on May 22, 2026.
Speaking further about his Star Wars character, Esposito said, “Moff Gideon, to me, was ultimately that young boy who never had any power, who was always questioned about the color of his skin. re you white? Are you Black? Your hair is kind of curly?’ And he then took on this place for me, where he was ultimately the power, not only because of his physicality but because of his brain…The way he spoke, and everything else which I was able to create in such a powerful way, empowered me to control the chaos around me.”
The first three seasons of The Mandalorian are available to stream on Disney+.
