Ariana Grande on Wicked’s Glinda Being Queer: ‘We’ll Talk About It More in Depth in Movie Two’

Ariana Grande says there will be a larger conversation to be had about Glinda being queer after the release of Wicked: For Good.

Wicked was released in United States theaters this past November. Directed by Jon M. Chu, the film stars Grande as Galinda/Glinda Upland, while Cynthia Erivo plays Elphaba Thropp. A sequel, Wicked: For Good, is scheduled to be released in November 2025.

Following the release of Wicked, Grande told Gay Times she thinks Glinda “might be a little in the closet.”

She said at the time, “You never know. Give it a little time. I mean, it is just a true love, and I think that transcends sexuality. It’s just kind of a deep safety within each other. And that’s why they probably ship it.”

Kristin Chenoweth, who played Glinda in the original Broadway run of the Wicked musical, voiced her agreement, as she commented on Instagram, “I thought so too way back when….”

What did Ariana Grande say about Glinda and Wicked: For Good?

Speaking with Variety, Grande was asked to elaborate on Glinda potentially being queer in Wicked.

“I think she’s a person who loves so much, and I do think that it goes beyond gender, and I think that’s a common theme in Oz,” she said. “I also think that the ways in which she loves Elphaba so much, and that forgiveness and that unconditional love that they share — I think they’re in love with each other. I know, yes, it’s platonic.”

Cutting herself off in order to avoid spoilers for Wicked: For Good, Grande concluded, “We’ll talk about it more in-depth in movie two.”

While still playing in many theaters across the United States, Wicked is now available to rent or purchase on digital streaming outlets such as Amazon Prime Video, Apple TV, Fandango at Home, and more. Wicked: For Good arrives on November 21, 2025, from Universal Pictures.
