James Gunn on How Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow Became the Second DCU Movie

Following Superman, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will act as the second film in James Gunn and Peter Safran’s DC Universe. But, it wasn’t always meant to take the slot, and here’s how it got chosen ahead of other announced DC projects.

Supergirl’s ‘incredible script’ allowed it to become DCU’s second movie

While talking about the development of Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow, Gunn revealed the Milly Alcock-led outing wasn’t always going to follow Superman directly. But, the quality of its script, written by Ana Nogueira, sped things up. Furthermore, Craig Gillespie also hopped on as director fairly quickly.

Here’s what James Gunn told Omelete.com:

“I didn’t necessarily know that Supergirl would be the second movie we were going to make, but Ana wrote an incredible script, and then we hired an incredible director, and we’re going to do this movie after Superman because he was the best option.”

Gunn also confirmed that other films had been written too. But, since Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow’s script seemed complete, it was fast-tracked. He continued:

“Other movies have been written, but they haven’t been as good as this one. So we’re going to keep going with that. Everything has to be good. Quality comes first in every project we do. And that’s more important than telling a grandiose mega-narrative.”

While Gunn didn’t confirm what those other movies were, fans do have the confirmed line-up for the first three DCU movies already. Starting from Superman on July 11, 2025, Supergirl: Woman of Tomorrow will follow it on June 26, 2026.

The third DCU movie is expected to be Clayface, coming out on September 11, 2026. After that, Dynamic Duo has its release date scheduled for June 30, 2028. Whether any other film from DCU’s Gods and Monsters chapter gets slotted between Clayface and Dynamic Duo remains to be seen.
