Kraven’s Box Office to Open Lowest in Sony’s Spider-Man Universe

Kraven the Hunter, featuring Aaron Taylor-Johnson as the eponymous Marvel character, debuts in US theaters on Friday, December 13, 2024. Despite the buzz around the movie, it might have a lower opening weekend at the box office than Madame Web, which is part of Sony’s Spider-Man Universe, just like Kraven. Notably, Madame Web made $25.8 million during its six-day opening and went on to accumulate $100.5 million at the global box office against a $100 million gross budget.

Aaron Taylor-Johnson-led Kraven could flop harder than Madame Web

Kraven the Hunter is tracking to make an abysmal $13 million to $15 million from 3,200 theaters at the domestic box office during its opening weekend.

These numbers are even worse than what Madame Web made ($15.3 million) in the traditional weekend. (via Variety) The Dakota Johnson-starrer’s box-office failure was accompanied by overwhelmingly negative reviews from the critics. Madame Web currently has an 11% approval rating on Rotten Tomatoes, based on 265 reviews. Meanwhile, the initial critical response to Kraven the Hunter is far from promising. However, the makers can hope that word-of-mouth might help in turning the tide.

The people behind Kraven the Hunter will also likely hope that it will perform significantly better in the overseas markets. The movie has a $130 million production budget. The rule of thumb is that a movie’s marketing budget equals what the filmmakers spend on production. If that is indeed the case with Kraven and taking into account the portion of the money from ticket sales that will go to the theater owners, the movie needs to build up momentum after the first week to turn profitable.

Earlier predictions about the performance of Kraven the Hunter were disappointing but not as bleak. As reported by SuperHeroHype in late November, the movie was tracking to open with lower numbers than Morbius, which made around $39 million in its debut weekend. Albeit, as the release date approached, these numbers have evidently gotten worse.
