Benedict Cumberbatch wants to continue playing Doctor Strange in the Marvel Cinematic Universe.
What did Benedict Cumberbatch say about his future as Doctor Strange?
In a conversation at the Red Sea Film Festival, Cumberbatch teased his future in the MCU, saying there are more things to explore with his character.
“I am interested in seeing where these costs take him,” Strange said via Variety. “There is a lot more to play, and it’s very exciting.”
Cumberbatch first appeared as Stephen Strange in 2016’s Doctor Strange. “When they are really good, they capture the zeitgeist, speak to us and our culture. They are so much fun to do,” said Cumberbatch.
Doctor Strange grossed over $677 million and became a surprise hit for Marvel. Why did a film about magic become so successful? Cumberbatch attributes it to how the film handled spirituality.
“It was something we hadn’t seen in the MCU, a whole new ground,” Cumberbatch said about the film’s use of spirituality. “Also just what he brings in terms of harnessing power through sheer will. That is a superpower, and as an origin story, it is pretty rich.”
Cumberbatch reprised his role for the sequel, 2022’s Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness. Cumberbatch also played key roles in Thor: Ragnarok, Avengers: Infinity War, Avengers: Endgame, and Spider-Man: No Way Home.
It is unknown when Cumberbatch will return to the MCU as Doctor Strange. Avengers: Doomsday and Avengers: Secret Wars are the likeliest candidates, considering Strange is a member of the superhero team.
