Mufasa: The Lion King’s First Reactions Call It ‘the Perfect Prequel’
The much-awaited Mufasa: The Lion King is nearing its theatrical release date and has already drawn its first reactions and reviews from critics. The prequel movie covers the origin story of Mufasa, Simba’s father and one of the most iconic kings in Pride Rock’s history. It also delves deep into the relationship of Mufasa and his brother Taka, who eventually goes on to become the villainous Scar. The premise makes for a pretty compelling narrative, and early reviewers of the upcoming flick seem to strongly agree with this notion.
Critics’ first reactions to Mufasa: The Lion King praise its ‘breathtaking technology’
Mufasa: The Lion King has mostly opened to positive reactions, with several critics lauding the film for its character-driven approach. Some reviewers have also praised the prequel’s effective use of technology to breathe life into the featured animals.
Jazz Tangcay of Variety has labeled the film as the ‘perfect prequel’ in his reaction, noting, “Mufasa: The Lion King’ is the perfect prequel. So beautifully crafted. The songs by Lin-Manuel Miranda and the score are absolutely divine and music to the ears. Pure joy.”
On the other hand, ComingSoon’s Jonathan Sim was more impressed by the film’s visual prowess. “MUFASA: THE LION KING manages to improve upon the 2019 ‘Lion King’ with deeper facial expressions and an original story, but does not impress with the new soundtrack, nor with the story’s emotional weight. Breathtaking technology that will make you miss the charm of 2D animation,” Sim explained.
Meanwhile, The DisInsider’s Dempsey Pillot went as far as to describe the prequel as a ‘biblical adventure in his review. He, “Pleased to say ‘Mufasa: The Lion King’ is really good! But what else would you expect from Barry Jenkins? A biblical exploration of destiny brilliantly disguised as an origin story for Mufasa and Scar.”
Following the immense success of Inside Out 2 and Deadpool & Wolverine, Disney will be hoping to close 2024 with another billion-dollar hit. Mufasa: The Lion King hits the big screens on December 20, 2024.
