Captain Planet Update: Glen Powell Explains Why Movie Hasn’t Been Made Yet
Glen Powell has provided an update regarding the long-awaited Captain Planet movie.
It was originally announced in 2016 that Paramount Pictures was attempting to develop a Captain Planet movie starring Powell and produced by Leonardo DiCaprio. The announcement came after several other failed attempts to turn the Captain Planet and the Planeteers cartoon series into a feature film.
The project hasn’t taken any major steps forward since then, however. Powell addressed the topic when speaking to IndieWire.
What did Glen Powell say about the Captain Planet movie?
“I’m very, very passionate about Captain Planet. I want that one to get made,” he said. “And I feel like we have a very, very strong way into that world and something that I think the world wants to see, but the people that own that property have other ideas and other plans, and that’s fine. Look, I’ll just keep making movies and keep doing what I’m going to do, and eventually, we’ll see if that ever comes back around. But at the end of the day, it’s out of your control.”
Powell’s last update on the Captain Planet movie was in May 2024, when he told Collider that he was still trying to make the movie happen. “Trust me, we have been working hard on that one for a long time,” he said at the time. “I’m optimistic about his future, but you never know the timeline.”
According to the 2016 announcement, Powell is also attached to write the film alongside Jono Matt. No director is currently attached to the project and no other casting information or plot details have been announced.
Captain Planet and the Planeteers was created by Barbara Pyle and Ted Turner. An animated superhero series that teaches children the importance of environmentalism as well as caring for the Earth, the show premiered in 1990.
