What is Heretics about?
“Recovered footage documents the horror of a group teens who break into the abandoned Simmons House. What begins as a thrill-seeking adventure turns into a nightmare as they discover a dark cult intent on sacrificing them one by one,” the synopsis reads.
The film is directed by Jose Prendes, while the script was written by Ryan Ebert.
The Asylum is known for making mockbusters, which are movies that are known for releasing around the same time as a popular studio film. Heretics is playing off of A24’s Heretic; a new horror movie directed by Scott Beck and Bryan Woods that stars Hugh Grant, Sophie Thatcher, and Chloe East.
“Two young missionaries are forced to prove their faith when they knock on the wrong door and are greeted by a diabolical Mr. Reed (Hugh Grant), becoming ensnared in his deadly game of cat-and-mouse,” the synopsis for Heretic reads.
Other recent mockbusters put out by The Asylum earlier this year include Ape x Mecha Ape: New World Order (playing off Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire), Road Wars: Max Fury (playing off Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga), Alien Rubicon (playing off of Alien: Romulus), and The Twisters (playing off Twisters). In 2024, the company has also released Monster Mash, Snow White and the Seven Samurai, Earthquake Underground, and Methgator.
Heretics will be shown at Glendale, California’s Laemmle Glendale; Roswell, Georgia’s Aurora Cineplex; Brooklyn, New York’s Film Noir Cinema; Brunswick, Ohio’s Hickory Ridge Cinemas; and Minneapolis, Minnesota’s Trylon Cinema.
