Live-Action Voltron Movie Cast Adds Sterling K. Brown, Rita Ora, & More

Amazon MGM Studios has officially announced the casting of Sterling K. Brown (This Is Us, American Fiction), Rita Ora (Descendants: The Rise of Red), and John Kim (Cruel Intentions), who have been tapped to join the Voltron movie cast for the upcoming live-action film adaptation.

Further details about their characters remain under wraps. They’ll join previously announced cast members Henry Cavill (Man of Steel, The Witcher) and newcomer Daniel Quinn-Toye. At the moment, the project currently has no production start date and theatrical release date.

Who is involved in the live-action Voltron movie?

The live-action Voltron movie will be directed by Rawson Marshall Thurber from a screenplay written by Ellen Shanman. Thurber is also serving as a producer alongside Todd Lieberman, Bob Koplar, and David Hoberman. It is a production by Hidden Pictures and Hobie Films.

“I want to make sure that we stay true to the heart and the spirit of Voltron,” Thurber said in a video message to fans during VoltCon. “In this film, we’re going to be introducing an entirely new generation of pilots. We’ve reimagined Voltron for the live-action world, but we’re going to stay true to…those iconic elements that you love, that I love. And I’m so excited to share it with you.”

The Voltron franchise is based on Toei Animation’s mecha anime series titled Beast King GoLion, which aired 52 episodes from 1981-1982. The story revolved around five young space pilots that control Robot Lions, which together into the titular super robot. It first gained international recognition when it was adapted by World Events Productions and ABC into an English animated series that ran on-air from 1984-1985. Due to its success, it spawned three more animated TV spin-offs, two video games, and a line of toys.
