Dune 2: Josh Brolin Says He’ll ‘Quit Acting’ If Denis Villeneuve Isn’t Nominated for an Oscar

Hollywood mainstay Josh Brolin recently made the surprising claim of quitting acting if the Oscars 2025 decide to snub Dune 2 director Denis Villeneuve. The one-time Academy Award nominee returned to the Dune franchise this year, reprising his role for the sequel. The movie famously received much praise from audiences and critics alike, with most reviews lauding Villeneuve for his vision. Echoing this sentiment, Brolin has stated that he will renounce acting if the filmmaker is not recognized in 2025’s Oscars.

The Avengers: Endgame star expressed his appreciation for Denis Villeneuve in his recently released memoir, From Under the Truck.

In the written account, Josh Brolin commended the Dune 2 director for his filmmaking chops, calling him one of the modern generation’s “master filmmakers.” He addressed Villeneuve’s chances at the 2025 Oscars, stating, “If he doesn’t get nominated this year, I’ll quit acting.”

Brolin then gave much plaudits to Dune 2 and the director, saying, “It was a better movie than the first one. When I watched it, it felt like my brain was broken open. It’s masterful, and Denis is one of our master filmmakers.” He concluded his statement on Dune’s sequel by submitting a playful warning to the Oscars. “If the Academy Awards have any meaning whatsoever, they’ll recognize him,” the actor added, per Variety.

Despite 2021’s Dune making waves among critics, its 2024 sequel surpassed the original movie in terms of ratings. Dune 2 famously recorded a critic score of 92% on Rotten Tomatoes, besting its predecessor’s rating of 83%. Josh Brolin also reprised his role of Gurney Halleck, the trusted mentor of Timothée Chalamet’s Paul Atreides for Dune 2.

Dune 3, the ultimate entry in Denis Villeneuve’s trilogy, is being developed at the time of writing. While the project does not have an official release date, the filmmaker has hinted at a 2026 premiere.
