Robot Dreams Trailer Previews Dialogue-Free Animated Movie From Neon and Pablo Berger

Oscar-nominated animated feature, Robot Dreams, will be arriving in theaters almost a year after it premiered at the 2023 Cannes Film Festival on May 21, 2023. Now, Neon has officially unveiled the US trailer for the animated film, set to hit theaters on May 31, 2024.

The film is described by Guillermo del Toro as “beautiful, unexpected, and tender.” Written and directed by acclaimed Spanish filmmaker Pablo Berger, Robot Dreams is based on Sara Varon’s comic book of the same name. The animated film, which has been nominated for Best Animated Feature at the 96th Academy Awards, doesn’t have any dialogue. 

In a press statement (via IndieWire), the director said that he “wanted to explore the infinite narrative possibilities of animation” with Robot Dreams. 

“‘Robot Dreams’ is a film that looks at the past, at traditional animation, but it is conceived for today’s audience. The film doesn’t exclude any kind of spectator. Classic animation, in two dimensions, drawn frame by frame, has its own 8 expressiveness, humanity, and empathy. In ‘Robot Dreams’ we have sought a fluidity and a line that reflect the story and its characters with simplicity,” said Berger.

He added, “And coming from working with actors, I have given maximum importance to the eyes. Our animated characters’ gaze has been the essential element in obtaining performances full of life. In an animation film, in some way, the animators are the actors, they are the ones who give life to each character. Working with them has, definitely, been one of the most gratifying experiences on this long journey.”

What is Robot Dreams about? 

Set in Manhattan, New York, in the 1980s, Robot Dreams chronicles the story of a robot and a dog’s unexpected friendship and how their separation hugely affects each of them.

The official synopsis for Robot Dreams reads: “Dog lives in Manhattan and he’s tired of being alone. One day he decides to build himself a robot, a companion. Their friendship blossoms, until they become inseparable, to the rhythm of 80’s NYC. One summer night, DOG, with great sadness, is forced to abandon ROBOT at the beach. Will they ever meet again?”

A Spanish-French co-production, Robot Dreams is produced by Ibon Cormenzana, Ignasi Estapé, Sandra Tapia Díaz, Jérôme Vidal, and Berger.
