Clayface DCU Horror Movie’s Budget Is Smaller Than Originally Expected

As DC Studios’ next theatrical release, Clayface was always expected to be a smaller-scale production. Its budget was reported to be nowhere close to summer blockbusters like Superman or Supergirl. However, the film’s initially reported budget may have overstated how much DC Studios actually invested in the project.

The Hollywood Reporter previously estimated Clayface’s budget at around $40 million, although no exact figure had been confirmed. However, the outlet’s latest report suggests that the initial estimate may have been off by at least $10 million. According to the new report, the film’s actual budget could be closer to $30 million.

How much money is Clayface tracking to make at the box office?

Against its reported budget, Clayface is currently tracking to earn $20 million over its opening weekend, putting it at the lower end of expectations.

According to Box Office Theory, the film could earn as much as $29 million between Friday and Sunday. That would bring it close to recouping its reported $30 million budget in a single weekend. Additionally, Clayface’s release timing could work in its favor, as its arrival in theaters just ahead of spooky season may help boost its box-office performance.

However, competition from other theatrical releases could make it difficult for Clayface to meet box-office expectations.

Big-budget titles like Street Fighter and Godzilla Minus One could overshadow the film, while other releases, including Whalefall and Cat in the Hat, could further increase the competition. Even a film from a completely different genre, such as Ali G.: Who Iz I?, could hurt Clayface’s box-office potential.

One advantage Clayface has, however, is that it will finally give fans a glimpse into Batman’s side of the DCU.
