Game of Thrones Movie Aegon’s Conquest Gets Release Date, Director in Huge Update

Westeros is heading to the big screen. The Game of Thrones movie has officially locked in a release date. The highly anticipated theatrical entry also secured its lead creative force behind the camera.

Warner Bros. has announced that Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest will arrive in theaters on June 1, 2029. Owen Harris, who previously helmed three episodes of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will direct the feature film.

The movie marks the franchise’s first-ever big-screen entry. Its story is expected to center on Aegon I Targaryen, the first Targaryen king of Westeros. The character has not previously appeared on-screen in any live-action series in the Game of Thrones universe.

What else do we know about the Game of Thrones: Aegon’s Conquest movie?

Harris is directing the film, with Beau Willimon attached to write the screenplay. Willimon is known for House of Cards and Andor.

The movie was first officially announced at CinemaCon in April 2026. The studio has not yet revealed any plot details or any cast members. Much of Aegon’s history is chronicled in George R.R. Martin’s Fire & Blood, a major source for the Targaryen history explored in the franchise.

As per the source material, Aegon I was a legendary yet ruthless ruler who united much of Westeros under Targaryen rule. He forged the Iron Throne from the swords of his defeated enemies and ruled alongside his sister-wives and queens, Visenya and Rhaenys. Their dynasty would shape Westeros’ history for generations.

The release timeline lines up with HBO’s long-term plan to deliver annual franchise content to viewers. A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms Season 2 will arrive in 2027, followed by House of the Dragon Season 4 in 2028.

The Aegon’s Conquest will release on June 1, 2029.
