Rocky Horror Star Susan Sarandon Detained by New York City Police
New York City Police Department has detained Susan Sarandon. The Academy Award-winning actress was among the protesters detained by the NYPD during a protest near the United Nations headquarters in Manhattan on Thursday, September 24.
The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Dead Man Walking star joined hundreds of protesters who gathered near the UN as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu prepared to address the 81st United Nations General Assembly.
In a video shared by Status Coup News on X, formerly Twitter, Sarandon is seen wearing a “Fund People Not Bombs” shirt as officers took her into custody.
The protest was organized by Jewish Voice for Peace, with demonstrators sitting in the street and blocking First Avenue near the UN. Roughly 250 people reportedly participated in the protest where Sarandon was detained, while other demonstrations drew larger crowds throughout the day.
Sarandon was joined by several other recognizable personalities, including Hacks star Hannah Einbinder, congressional candidate Darializa Avila Chevalier, and other activists and public officials. More than a dozen elected officials and candidates were also among protesters involved in the street protest, as reported by the local outlets.
Why was Susan Sarandon protesting in New York?
The protest was organized in opposition to Netanyahu’s appearance at the UN and to protest U.S. support for Israel during the ongoing war in Gaza. Protesters called for an end to military support and highlighted civilian suffering in the region.
Jewish Voice for Peace was among the groups coordinating demonstrations around Netanyahu’s visit. The protest also coincided with Netanyahu’s address to the General Assembly.
As he entered the chamber, dozens of diplomatic representatives walked out before or during the beginning of his speech. Outside the UN, protesters continued blocking nearby streets as police moved in to make arrests.
Sarandon has a long history of political activism and has previously participated in demonstrations related to U.S. foreign policy and humanitarian issues. Her latest detention adds another high-profile chapter to that record.
