Romeo and Juliet Gets a Huge Sci-Fi Twist in New Thriller Movie From Halo Director

A Halo director is stepping into a whole new love story. He has signed on to a movie about two people from Earth and the Moon who fall for each other, a bit like Romeo and Juliet. The romance story takes place on the Moon in 2060, nearly three decades after humanity established a permanent civilization there.

Roel Reiné is set to direct the sci-fi thriller Lunar Colony, Deadline confirmed. Centerboro Productions, Sintered Steel Productions, and Convoke Media are developing the upcoming project. Cerise Fukuji penned the script, inspired by NASA’s Artemis program.

The story follows Tiara and Josh, two young people raised on opposite sides of the Earth-Moon divide. As Earth relies more heavily on the lunar colony’s resources, political tensions between the two civilizations threaten a power struggle. Their romance challenges political loyalties and family expectations.

Producer Patricia A. Beninati ties the story to Shakespeare. She calls it “a classic romance in the vein of Romeo and Juliet.”

What else has Roel Reiné worked on besides Halo?

Beyond Halo, Reiné’s TV credits include Marvel’s Inhumans, Black Sails, Knightfall, Wu Assassins, Colosseum, and Ancient Empires. He directed the third and fourth episodes of Halo Season 1, titled Emergence and Homecoming.

On the film side, the Dutch filmmaker directed Death Race 2, The Scorpion King 3: Battle for Redemption, Hard Target 2, The Condemned 2, Fistful of Vengeance, Classified, and Line of Fire. The 56-year-old also directed The Delivery in the Netherlands, earning him the Dutch Academy Award for Best Director.

With Lunar Colony, he is once again exploring futuristic space worlds with a romantic background. “Underneath the scale of the science fiction, it is a deeply human story about freedom, love and the world we choose to leave behind,” the 56-year-old said.

Production is targeted for 2027, and principal casting is underway for Lunar Colony.
